A person who was struck and killed by a northbound Richmond train on the "wayside" meaning in the BART trackway at or just north of North Berkeley station is causing major delays on the Richmond BART line Tuesday afternoon, and affecting other lines as well. As BART spokesperson Alicia Trost says, "I can confirm that there was a fatality [and] we are awaiting the coroner." Also, no trains are stopping at North Berkeley for time being, and likely for the next couple of hours.

She does advise that it is still possible to get to Richmond, albeit "slowly." "We are single-tracking and running limited trains through the station," she said, with some trains stopping and turning back at Macarthur Station, and only select Richmond trains proceeding north from there.

AC Transit can get passengers from surrounding stations to North Berkeley.

The incident occurred at 1:15 p.m. when a BART operator reported having possibly struck a person who was in the tracks at the time, shortly after leaving North Berkeley headed northbound.

This is causing a 20- to 30-minute delay on the Richmond line, and it's unclear whether this is going to extend into the evening commute.

Update: As of 2:45 p.m., the coroner had arrived and the investigation is ongoing, with single-tracking expected to continue for a while.

"We have no details at this time as to how the person ended up down on the tracks, or ended up getting struck by the train," says Trost, but BART Police are investigating.
