Two BART cops went to question a suspicious and nervous-seeming man outside a parking structure at the Hayward BART station on Christmas morning after seeing him walking away from a U-Haul with a smashed rear window. The man was quickly identified as 28-year-old Charles Goetting, as ABC 7 reports, and a background check found that Goetting was on probation for burglary, drugs, and gun possession.
As the Chronicle reports, per Deputy BART Police Chief Jeffrey Jennings' description, "Goetting cooperated at first, but when the officers asked him to put his arms above his head, he reached inside his waistband and pulled out a handgun."
The incident occurred out on the street next to the garage, on Grand Street in downtown Hayward.
Goetting succeeded in shooting one BART officer in the arm, according to Jennings, and the other officer then fired on Goetting twice, disabling him. He was then taken into custody and transported to a hospital. Goetting underwent surgery and is now in stable condition, and the wounded officer is said to be in good condition.
According to the Mercury-News, via a young witness on the scene, Goetting was shot in the hip and side.
It was only later, after inspection of Goetting's U-Haul, that the body of a dead man was discovered among shovels, sand bags, several tarps, and gas canisters. Per the Merc, homicide detectives were called in at 7 p.m.
The coroner's officer removed the body from the parking garage at 11 p.m. Friday night after a day-long investigation of the vehicle.
According to ABC 7 reporter Melanie Woodrow, Goetting used a stolen gun in the shooting, and the U-Haul van appeared stolen as well.

The identity of the victim has not yet been revealed.
Update: The victim has been identified as 40-year-old Jason Colin Anderson whose last known address was in Bay Point.
