A brief, passing storm Sunday morning caused high winds and several flash floods, as well as fallen trees and tree limbs in various parts of the Bay Area. The heavy rain and wind appears to have been the cause of a car accident on Highway 580 near Altamont that took the lives of two parents.
As the ABC 7 reports, the single-vehicle incident happened sometime after 10 a.m. Sunday and was reported at 10:38 a.m. The vehicle, containing two parents and two children, may have hydroplaned across the freeway before flipping several times and tumbling down an embankment. Both parents died and one of the two children, ages 5 and 6, suffered traumatic injuries.

The storm also took down trees like the one above on Baker Street, and fell onto homes and cars in San Pablo, Hayward, East Palo Alto, and elsewhere as ABC 7 shows. CBS 5 also reported on several tree limbs that fell onto cars along McAllister Street near Franklin in SF. Some Muni wires got snapped in the process as well.
Drivers caught in the storm may have had other troubles too, including flash floods like one that occurred at a low-lying onramp to 101 at Alemany and Bayshore Boulevards and which stranded several cars that had to get towed back out, as ABC 7 reports. Flooding was also reported via KRON 4 in the Inner Sunset in the vicinity of 7th Avenue and Lawton.
The Chronicle reports that a group of die-hard runners still showed up for the Great Santa Run at Crissy Field Sunday morning, and ran around in their Santa suits despite being pelted with wind, hail, and rain.
In related news, storm-related high seas outside the Golden Gate on Friday night caused a container ship to dump a dozen mostly empty shipping containers, the contents of one of which are still being cleaned up on Baker Beach.
Residents are being asked to contact the Coast Guard Sector San Francisco Command Center at (415) 399-7300 if they see any of the other containers or detritus.
