A 25-year-old man was arrested Sunday, after he allegedly stabbed a 58-year-old woman in the neck as she sat in her wheelchair.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, the woman was on the street in her wheelchair near Ninth and Mission Streets at 5:30 p.m. Sunday. That's when Hector Chanartiga allegedly approached her and "cut her neck multiple times" with what police describe as a "kitchen knife."

Police say that after the stabbing, Chanartiga fled. He was followed, however, by a witness who flagged down police officers, who in turn took him into custody.

The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment of several lacerations to her neck. According to police, she's expected to survive.

Chanartiga, who has no known address, was booked into San Francisco County Jail on concealed weapons charges and for attempted murder. As of publication time, he remains in custody.
