Yet another high-priced instrument has been stolen out of a parked car, as the San Francisco Police Department today issued a report noting the theft of a valuable violin, bow, and case from a car parked on the 1300 block of Webster Street. The combined value of the three items is estimated to be between $17,500 and $22,500.
The theft occurred on November 20th, sometime between 7 p.m. and 9:20 p.m., and the instrument has been described by SFPD as having "great sentimental value to the family."
The report notes that the violin is a 1795 “George Craske” full size violin, the bow is a Fedriksson Bow, and the case is a BAM Hightech Slimline violin case (the case alone is worth $3,500).
This is not the first time an extremely pricey instrument has been stolen from a parked vehicle — the most prominent recent example being that of the $8,500 cello stolen from a car parked in the Union Square parking garage in April of this year.
The violin owner can only hope that like with the case of a cello stolen from the SF Conservatory of Music in 2012, the violin thief (or thieves) will realize that moving a rare instrument is a difficult proposition, and that the instrument will somehow find its way back to the owner.
Anyone with information regarding the theft can call the SFPD Anonymous Tip Line at (415) 575-4444.
