Former 49er Aldon Smith, who got suspended from that team last year and ultimately released from his contract following a gun charge and a couple of DUIs and who's been arrested a total five times since entering the NFL in 2011, has been suspended from his new team, the Oakland Raiders, for a full year. As ESPN reports, the 26-year-old has been officially suspended by the NFL for his role in an August 6, 2015 drunk driving incident that appears to be the same incident that led to his August 7th release from the 49ers.

As the LA Times reported in September, Smith was charged in a hit-and-run drunk-driving incident that happened in Santa Clara — he was actually in his parked SUV at the time but swung the door open and caused $500 in damage to a smaller car, fled the scene, and was later determined to be intoxicated.

The 49ers had basically had it at that point, but Smith told KTVU, "I want everybody to understand this wasn't a DUI. The situation that happened could have been handled differently. I apologize to everybody I did let down and I apologize for how it all played out."

This incident has been hanging over him ever since, awaiting the NFL's decision, but out on the field Smith told the San Jose Mercury-News the other week, "Happy I'm out here. Good group of guys, a lot of cool, funny personalities.

As you may recall, Smith was arrested in April 2014 after an incident at LAX involving a joking comment about a bomb and a TSA agent, and then after his suspension last fall from the 49ers, and subsequently prescribed in-home rehab program, he was seen celebrating with friends over $3,000 worth of wine at Twenty Five Lusk.

Smith won't be back on the field now until next year, if then. He only signed a one-year deal with the Raiders that began September 11.
