The man shot and killed by San Francisco Police Department officers Wednesday night at St. Luke’s Hospital has been identified as a 25-year-old man suspected of stealing a shotgun from a San Bruno store just half-an-hour before his death.

On Thursday morning, the San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man at the center of the shooting as SF resident Javier Ivan Lopez Garcia. According to SFPD spokesperson Officer Grace Gatpandan, at around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, San Bruno Police say that a man matching Garcia's description "had committed a robbery at Big 5 Sporting Goods, taking a shot gun and ammunition from the store at gun point."

Just 30 minutes later, at around 4:15, SFPD were called to a construction area at St. Luke’s Hospital "on numerous reports of a person armed with multiple firearms" who was wearing white cover-alls, Gatpandan says.

St Luke's is located near where Valencia and Cesar Chavez Streets meet, in an area described by some as Bernal Heights, and by others as the Mission District.

Mission Local reports that "bystanders indicated that the shooter ran up the stairs by the elevator shaft after passing entry through a fence."

Gatpandan says that when police arrived they could hear shots being fired, and spotted Garcia "standing atop of a construction elevator pointing a rifle at the hospital."

According to Gatpandan, Garcia "then lowered the rifle and pointed down towards the officers."

"Not knowing of anyone being already injured or killed," Gatpandan says, "and fearing for their own safety and the safety of other persons present, three officers fired at the suspect."

ABC7 reports that after Garcia was struck, police deployed flash bang grenades "to ensure he was no longer a threat, as his rifle was still within reach."

Garcia died at the scene, in what the Chron describes as "a large, open-air construction elevator that was stopped on the sixth floor of the building." A pistol and the stolen shotgun were in Garcia's possession when he died, Gatpandan says

According to Gatpandan, "The suspect acted alone in this incident." Citing an ongoing investigation, Gatpandan says that police did not have any information on a motive for Gacria's actions at this time.

"We have no idea why he did what he did at the construction site, but he did steal firearms and shotgun shells from Big 5," SFPD Chief Greg Suhr said at a press conference Wednesday evening.

"There were no injuries to any officers, hospital staff, patients or contract employees," Gatpandan says.

A statement sent Thursday morning by St Luke's thanks "the swift action by our hospital security and the San Francisco Police Department," and says that as of 10 p.m. Wednesday, the hospital had resumed normal operations.

According to the statement, the hospital has "counselors on site today to interact with our staff and to provide any assistance they may need."

Gatpandan emphasizes that this "is an active and on-going investigation," and is being looked in to by SFPD's Homicide Detail, the SFPD Internal Affairs Division, the San Francisco District Attorney's Office, the San Francisco Medical Examiner's Office and the Office of Citizens Complaints.
