Not surprisingly to anyone who lives here, San Franciscans seem by and large to hate dealing with tourists — even though our fair city is considered one of the top, if not the top, domestic tourist destination in the country in any given year. The latest data on this comes entirely from Twitter, however, which is the world's current biggest echo chamber of frivolous complaining, so that's worth considering. But as this Stratos Jets blog reports, SF is among the top 10 cities for tourist hate, based on the volume of negative tweets from locals about tourists.

The methodology:

We pulled 37,171 geotagged tweets from June 1, 2014 to July, 20 2015 containing the terms “tourist” and “tourists.” We also looked at 26 different cities that had at least 100 related tweets. We then examined all tweets containing those terms for each state as well, though we lowered the threshold to at least 30 related tweets as not every state had 100 tourist-related tweets. We ran the tweets through the AlchemyAPI sentiment analysis to determine how positive or negative each city’s and state’s tourist-related tweets were.

We utilized 2013 population data to calculate the per capita rate for each state when comparing things such as vulgarity of tweets and tweets telling tourists to leave.

The results show that Twitterers in Chicago and Atlanta, by and large, LOVE their tourists. But in a bunch of other cities, including (for some reason) Arlington, Texas, tourists are less than wanted.

I think it's worth noting that SF actually falls low on this ranking, which is surprising, but I think a lot of people still think of SF as a friendly — if sometimes poop-filled — town. We rank well below New York, Boston and Las Vegas in terms of tourist hating on Twitter, and just a smidge below L.A.

Now, do a search under "tourist" and "Segway" in San Francisco, and the results are likely to be a whole lot more snarky.
