A inmate of San Francisco's County Jail was found dead Tuesday night, in what the Sheriff's Department is describing as an "apparent suicide."

50-year-old Alberto Carlos Petrolino was being held in County Jail 2, which is located at 425 7th Street, a Sheriff's Department spokesperson confirms. According to the Ex, he'd been arrested Saturday by the California Highway Patrol on two misdemeanor warrants, for "twice violating a stay-away order."

He appeared in court Monday with an attorney from San Francisco's Public Defender's Office, where a judge ordered that he be held on $100,000 bail. On Tuesday evening, he was found dead, in what the SF Sheriff's department referred to as an "apparent suicide" in a statement sent to media.

A call to the department requesting details on what led them to believe the death was a suicide was not returned at publication time, and no cause of death has been announced by the San Francisco Medical Examiner's Office.

SF Weekly reports that Petrolino is the third inmate to die in San Francisco jails this year. 57-year-old Alvin Haynes died in San Francisco County Jail No. 5 in San Bruno on January 26 after "a confrontation with multiple deputies," the Chron reported at the time.

SF Sheriff's Department spokesperson Mark Nicco tells SFist that an inmate named David Perry also died in one of SF's jails in March. Nicco didn't have any additional details on Perry's passing, but did say that it didn't appear that there were any "extenuating circumstances." The department, Nicco says, has yet to release the SF Medical Examiner's report on that fatality, so until then the cause of death remains unknown.

The San Francisco Sheriff’s Department Internal Affairs Unit, the San Francisco Police Department and the San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office are all performing "independent investigations," of Petrolino's death, according to the Sheriff’s Department statement. They also say that "Mr. Petrolino’s family has been notified of his death," and that "Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi extends his condolences to Mr. Petrolino’s family."
