A CHP officer had to smash open a car window in order to remove a reckless driver after he ignored officers and drove onto a closed part of Doyle Drive.
On Friday, just before 3 p.m., a possibly-drunk driver had pulled over to the side of the road in Sausalito after being spotted by CHP officers on the Golden Gate Bridge. After Golden Gate Bridge personnel contacted him, he drove back, southbound on 101 across the span. According to Bay City News, the driver, identified as 37-year old Edward Wong, ignored CHP attempting to pull him over and plowed through a lowers toll plaza gate into a closed portion of Doyle Drive. Due to the road closure, there were extra CHP officers patrolling the bridge at the time.
Wong continued southbound on Doyle Drive and eventually encountered more CHP vehicles at the closed entrance to the roadway. He was eventually boxed in by heavy traffic on the open lanes and pursuing officers. After refusing to exit his car and locking his car doors, an officer had to smash the passenger window on Wong's car in order to allow officers to get him out and arrest the driver. He was determined to not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol and was later booked on a charge of felony evasion.
Doyle Drive remained closed this weekend as crews make improvements to the roadway and is scheduled to reopen 5 a.m., Monday morning.
