Two Market Street pedestrians — one who was in a crosswalk, another who was on the sidewalk — were hospitalized Wednesday night after an errant motorcyclist smashed into them both.

San Francisco Police Department spokesperson Officer Grace Gatpandan says that police were called to the intersection of Third and Market Streets at around 9:10 Wednesday night. When they arrived, they found three injured people: one pedestrian who had been walking on the sidewalk, another pedestrian who was in the crosswalk area, and the motorcyclist who'd struck them both.

A witnesses told ABC7 that the motorcyclist was speeding up 3rd Street onto Market at the time of the collision.

"The motorcyclist just kind of jumps onto the curb," witness Surya Bhupatiraju told ABC7.

"He's going like 30-40 mph, jumps on the curb, hits our friend, she falls face forward, and then he comes and he hits the newsstands here and in doing so, he hit someone else."

All three were transported to San Francisco General Hospital, Gatpandan says.

"One pedestrian sustained life threatening injuries," she says, and "the second pedestrian sustained lacerations to the head but is expected to survive."

As of publication time, Gatpandan did not know the motorcyclist's condition.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation by SFPD's Traffic Collision Investigation Unit, Gatpandan says.

"As with any collision, we will look at the possibility of speed, roadway, time of day, right of way, and many other factors that could attribute to this incident. Investigators will also take into account any possible surveillance footage and witness statements taken at the scene," she says.

As always, SFPD encourages anyone who might have witnessed the crash to contact the SFPD Anonymous Tip Line at (415) 575-4444 or to text a tip to TIP411 with SFPD at the beginning of the message.
