Do you know Madera? Nicknamed "The Heart Of California," this Central Valley city is, according to Wikipedia, most notable for its "historic Madera water tower and a fully operational drive-in movie theater." Add to that list William Smith (pictured above), the subject of the happiest-looking mugshot I've seen in a long time, and I see at A LOT of mugshots.
According to Fox 40 (which serves Sacramento, Stockton, and Modesto), Smith was slashing the tires of at least four cars parked at the Madera High School North Campus.
When someone tried to intercede, he threatened that person with the same knife he was doing the tire slashing with, then ran off. Police found him in a nearby back yard and arrested him, ABC30 reports.
Police say that they don't believe Smith knew his victims, and that the slashings were "at random."
Presumably, his tattoos are less random? As a Justified fan, my first thought when I saw Smith's photo was "is this the real life Dewey Crowe?" After all, "NSM" is typically an acronym used by the National Socialist Movement — and we're not talking about the nice socialists who want to give you health care and share their wheat germ. These guys are a white supremacist group with all the neo-Nazi ideals you might expect.
Now, to be clear, I'm not saying that Smith is a member of that hate group — who knows, he could be a funeral parlor staffer who got that ink back when National Selected Morticians was the name used by the group that's become Selected Independent Funeral Homes! But with that dubious acronym on his chest, one might wonder if that smile stayed on his face once he got into lockup.
Geez, let's just hope New York Magazine doesn't think Madera's part of SF, too.
