Step right up and meet the E-Embarcadero, the new addition to Muni's service that's simultaneously quite vintage and historic.
As Hoodline and Market Street Railway report, the long-awaited return of the E begins with weekend-only service starting on July 25th and full week service targeted for early next year.
First, the route: The E-line will roll the length of the Embarcadero, from Fisherman's Wharf to the ballpark and the Caltrain station at 4th and King. Yes, it's going to be a Peninsula crowd-pleaser, and yes, it's basically just an extension of the F-line (which it will hopefully make less crowded).
From Fisherman's Wharf to the Ferry building, the E-Embarcadero will share F-line boarding platforms, and from Folsom to Caltrain it will stop at low-level platforms with ADA ramps at four N-line and T-line stops. Service will run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. with arrivals every 20 minutes.
Muni's original E streetcar line was the E Union line. Discontinued in 1947, that ran a route north from the Ferry Building along The Embarcadero to Washington and Jackson Streets, where it turned west to reach the Presidio.
Five historic double-end vintage streetcars will cruise the new E-line, which has been trotted out in the past for special occasions such as the America's Cup.Riders have known the E would be coming back since 2013, though availability of vintage streetcars was seen as an obstacle. Proposals to revive the E were first put forward in 1974, and the coming resurrection is the result of many years of advocacy on the part of such groups as Market Street Railway.
As with the F-line, cost for the E-line will be the same as for the bus.
