Following this morning's news of a literal Muni and tour bus collision, Curbed has word of a metaphorical one: the E-Embarcadero, a proposed Muni line that would connect the touristical attractions of the Embarcadero via a new designated streetcar.
The plan would make permanent an America's Cup Muni line that's been shuttling people between the Wharves and 4th and King Streets all summer. It's moving slowly through the approvals process, but an already-approved F-Line extension to Fort Mason and murmurs of a southern extension of the line to Pier 70 have the makings of a line that could run from the length of the Embarcadero and then some.
The line will join the F-Market in using vintage streetcars, echoing the historic nature of the line. Muni ran an original E streetcar line from the Ferry Building along the Embarcadero all the way to the Presidio, but it was discontinued in 1947. In typical San Francisco fashion, the new E line has been in discussion since 1974 but plans have never made much progress until now.
No real word on how far out this project is from becoming reality, but availability of vintage streetcars may be the biggest factor in determining the timeline.
