The pedestrian who was struck by a speeding BMW last Tuesday night while crossing the street at 8th and Market remains hospitalized at SF General but is now recovering and has spoken to the press. He is 19-year-old Sam Maynard, and as the Chronicle reports, he'd only been in SF for a week when he was mowed down by a blue, four-door BMW that police officers proceeded to chase across the Bay Bridge, and lose.

The incident happened at 10:32 p.m. last Tuesday when Maynard and two friends were walking home to a SoMa apartment from a gym. Maynard was walking just a few feet in front of his friends when the car struck him, and "he was tossed several feet into the air before landing in an unmoving heap."

His mother has flown here to be with him, and Maynard says, "I'm incredibly lucky," despite the fact that he's recovering from a brain injury, ruptured spleen, broken shoulder, and multiple broken teeth — which he says are the things he's most upset about. He also says he has no memory of the crash, and the last thing he remembers is leaving the gym.

Maynard, a computer science major at the University of Texas, was here in tech central for a summer internship at Square.

And Maynard was fairly lucky, given the spate of recent hit-and-run incidents, several of which have been connected to dangerous high-speed pursuits by the SFPD. Just a day before there were not one but two incidents of collisions with pedestrians — one involving a high-speed pursuit of a parolee, who ended up crashing near the Westfield Centre; and the other involving a BMW thief who drove a car out of a SoMa showroom on June 1, committed a hit and run near Union Square, and was subsequently arrested during a domestic dispute.

On April 10, pedestrian Bridget Klecker was killed in a crosswalk at California and Kearny by a suspect vehicle in a high-speed chase.

And what is with all the BMWs involved in these crimes? Yet another BMW was involved in a brief chase (which was called off) on Friday near Land's End, and ultimately that same car turned out to be the site of an officer-involved shooting near Lake Merritt in Oakland the next morning which killed the driver, 30-year-old Demouria Hogg.

And remember this fiery BMW crash after a police pursuit this time last year?
