A couple went on a 3,000 mile cross-country roadtrip to San Francisco to take part in Escape From Alcatraz, only to discover their bikes stolen a day before the race.
Chad Kimbrell and Candace Zipf woke up Saturday morning to go for a practice swim ahead of Sunday's race when they discovered both of their bicycles stolen just outside of their hotel. "The valet guys are there, the lobby, you can see where where we're at, no issues at all... I felt really comfortable with that," Kimbrell told ABC 7 about the reassurances the hotel gave the athlete.
The bikes were attached to a rig on his motorcycle, and officials say somebody cut the cable and removed the bikes, all just a few feet from the hotel's security and valet booth. The bikes are worth about $20,000.
Kimbrell says that if he knew San Francisco had such a problem with bike thefts, he would not have left them on his motorcycle outside.
"We can't not do the race because we don't have bikes, we'll figure something out," Zipf told Kimbrell. Since the theft, a fellow triathlete in the race donated bikes to the couple to use in Escape From Alcratraz.
The hotel will be sending their security footage to the police for review.
