Outer Richmond fans of the scrappy little 4-Star Theatre at 23rd and Clement are going to be sad about this: The Richmond District Blog is reporting that the 4-Star, which has been a cinema since 1913, is now up for sale for $2.8 million as a development site.

The 4-Star is owned by Lee Neighborhood Theaters, which also operates The Presidio and the Marina Theater, and in recent years carved out a niche for showing Asian and arthouse films — though they mostly run Hollywood stuff these days.

A listing on Loopnet says that the property is zoned for mixed use and has the potential to be a 40-foot condo development on "highly desirable" Clement Street.

It seems unlikely that a buyer would want to preserve the movie theater as-is, but you never know.

This news follows on the news that the non-profit arthouse Roxie Theater in the Mission just got a three-year reprieve, and won't be disappearing for at least that long. But that property's got to be worth a mint, too.
