"Thirty years ago," filmmaker Daniel Soares says, "rollerskating was everywhere" in San Francisco. "But these days it's nearly impossible to find people on roller skates," which is one of the reasons Soares made SF's few remaining eight-wheelers the subject of his documentary short "Totally Free."
Exploring "these weirdly wonderful roller skaters, how they got into skating and why it keeps them alive," "Totally Free" introduces us to roller skaters in Golden Gate Park, all of whom have their own stories — and all who clearly skate because they love it, not because it's on trend.
"So what if it looks weird? So what if it's not mainstream popular?" one asks.
"If it's not for you, then it's not for you. But if it is for you, and other people think it's weird or not cool, then don't listen to them. Just listen to your heart." Words to live by!
