Bicyclists will be gathering in San Francisco this evening to pay tribute to those who've died on city streets and to "advocate for safer streets for all."

According to the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, riders will gather at the Sports Basement on 1590 Bryant Street at 6 p.m. for refreshments and a ceremony honoring cyclists who have been killed while riding in SF.

At 7 p.m., they'll take off on "an approximately 11 mile, silent, no-drop group ride that visits high injury cycling routes and sites of recent cycling fatalities," organizers say.

Per the national Ride of Silence site, SF's is just one of hundreds of worldwide rides planned for today, all "To HONOR those who have been injured or killed, to RAISE AWARENESS that we are here, to ask that we all SHARE THE ROAD," organizers say.

KQED reported from last year's event, saying that "At rush hour, 14 motorcycle cops stopped traffic at major intersections in the Mission, SoMa and up Market Street. Uninterrupted, dozens of cyclists rode in silence." Here's their video from that ride:

Organizers of tonight's ride in SF ask that you RSVP here "so we have some idea of the number of riders," but say that no rider will be turned away.
