The storied small club space at Fifth and Folsom which has been home to Annie's Social Club, the Covered Wagon Saloon, Cherry (the birthplace of the popular Bootie party) and most recently Qi Ultra Lounge will be coming to life once again later this year as a new dance club from the owner of DNA Lounge called Codeword (917 Folsom Street). Eater has some details, via DNA's blog and owner Jamie Zawinski, who says he'll be getting the keys on June 1 but he would be "foolish as to predict an opening date" given the bureaucracy he'll be facing.

The name, by the way, is inspired by the residence hotel/SRO upstairs: The CW Hotel, which has had that name since the Covered Wagon days.

Thankfully, nightlife scored a victory this week in terms of protections from noise-complaining neighbors — especially those who moved in long after the club was there. But it's unclear what the new club's permit might look like given its proximity, as Zawinski notes, to a brand new massive condo development called the Mosso that is going in directly across the street.

In any event, Zawinski expects that Codeword will be a 200-person capacity club, potentially with live music as well as dance parties, and he'll be building a kitchen with an offshoot of DNA Pizza here as well, connected to the club.

Hooray for new nightlife!
