One suspect is in custody after a gunfight between two cars sent police on a crazy chase across the Bay Bridge early Sunday morning.
It was 1:50 a.m. Sunday when San Francisco Police Department officers patrolling the Bayview intersection of Napoleon Street and Evans Avenue saw shots fired between a maroon-colored SUV and a blue sedan, spokesperson Officer Grace Gatpandan says.
Police also found shell casings at Evans and Rankin Street, Gatpandan says.
Police lost track of the blue vehicle from the confrontation, but were able to follow the maroon SUV, chasing it as its driver headed onto the freeway and over the Bay Bridge.
As the suspects crossed the bridge's eastern span, they were seen tossing a handgun from the SUV, Gatpandan says. Police later retrieved the gun, she says.
With assistance from the California Highway Patrol, SFPD officers kept after the SUV into Oakland, when its driver exited the freeway, crashing into a utility pole near Fruitvale Avenue and East Eighth Street.
The SUV's driver and one of its passengers fled from the scene of the crash, and remain at large. Another passenger was nabbed by police, who transported him to an Oakland hospital for his injuries in the crash.
No one appears to be injured as a result of the shooting, Gatpandan says, though (as noted earlier), the driver and passenger(s) of the blue vehicle are in the wind.
As always, Gatpandan says, anyone with information on the case should call the SFPD's anonymous tip line at 415-575-4444 or can send a tip by text to TIP411 with "SFPD" at the start of the message.
