"Belgian brasserie" is the newly announced concept for the Cafe Des Amis space (2000 Union Street at Buchanan), which we learned in January was coming under the ownership of Adriano Paganini. Paganini is a partner in Beretta, Delarosa, Starbelly, Super Duper, Lolinda, and Uno Dos Tacos, and he tells Eater today that the Belgian thing is "a concept I've been wanting to do for years. I was just waiting for the right location."
The menu will focus on the classic moules frites (mussels and fries), and steak frites, but under an as-yet-unhired chef there will be plenty of other stuff too, like salads, house-made sausages, and something involving Belgian cheese.
The space was already well suited to a brasserie concept, which Cafe Des Amis was, albeit more French, complete with a Parisian-style zinc-topped bar. But Paganini's team is currently at work lightening up the space and changing the color palette to be more gray with natural woods, and getting rid of the black paint that had trimmed the large dining room.
In total, the place seats 200, including sidewalk seating,
They're now aiming for a May 1 opening, with the new name still TBA.
