Congressman Mike Honda, a 73-year-old Silicon Valley representative, is also a loyal and loving grandfather. Today, as CBS5 notes, Honda tweeted some love for his young trans grandchild along with a touching photo of the two of them. It's a really sweet grandfather-granddaughter portrait.

Honda is the founder and chairman of the Congressional Anti-Bullying Caucus as well as a member of the LGBT Equality Caucus. He followed up the tweet on Facebook after reading Marsha Aizuimi's supportive response on the Huffington Post. Aizuimi is the mother of a transgender son, and was struck by a recent speech Honda gave at an event near Los Angeles called Courageous Conversation aimed at superintendents and school leaders. There, he said,

As both an individual, and as an educator, I have experienced and witnessed bullying in its many forms. And as the proud jichan, or grandpa, of a transgender grandchild, I hope that my granddaughter can feel safe going to school without fear of being bullied. I refuse to be a bystander while millions of people are dealing with the effects of bullying on a daily basis.

Honda responded to Aizumi's praise, writing that "Marsha has been one of the leading advocates for AAPI transgender youth, and I am proud to work with her. We need to ensure that our LGBTQ youth are never bullied because of their real or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. These children need our protection and our love."

According to the San Jose Mercury News, Honda's granddaughter is named Malisa. She is 8 years old and has identified as female from an early age. "We look at gender as binary," Honda told the Merc, "But when you spread them out, you have a spectrum of who we are." For Honda's re-election campaign brochure the congressman proudly suggested a new photo of Malisa be taken. "We need you to be who you are in the campaign photos," he reportedly said to her.
