San Francisco was struck with its 40th and 41st homicides of 2014 yesterday, in two violent incidents just a few blocks apart.
According to the San Francisco Medical Examiner's office, 25-year-old Casey Bissell, of Berkeley, was stabbed to death at around 2:30 a.m. Sunday at 18th and Valencia Streets.
San Francisco Police Department spokesperson Officer Gordon Shyy says that officers were called to the scene on reports of a fight. That's when officers found Bissel suffering from at least one stab wound.Though he was rushed to San Francisco General Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter, Shyy says.
Several people were detained following the scrum, Shyy says, but as of publication time, no arrests have been made. Shyy didn't have any further details on what inspired the fight, or any motive behind the stabbing Monday morning, but said that the homicide remains under investigation.
Just 30 minutes earlier, another man was shot to death at 20th and Mission Streets, Shyy says.
The 27-year-old victim, identified by SF Weekly as Camilo Senchyna Beltran, was shot in the upper body at 2 a.m. Sunday. He, too, was transported to SF General, where he was pronounced dead, Shyy says.
According to Shyy, the suspects in the shooting fled on foot. He did not have any additional information or suspect descriptions at this time.
These two homicides mark San Francisco's 40th and 41st for 2014. The city's last homicide was on Thanksgiving Day, when 24-year-old Daron Raynaldo was killed in Potrero Hill. At publication time, no arrests have been made in his death.
According to the Chron, San Francisco had 48 homicides at the end of 2013, and 69 in 2012.
Bringing it back to yesterday's killings: Shyy couldn't say if the two were related, but urged anyone with any information on either crime to call the SFPD's anonymous tip line at 415)-575-4444 or to send a tip by text message to TIP411 with “SFPD” in the message.
