I know, I know, the November, 2014 election isn't even here yet, and here we are talking about 2015's race! Blame the Chron's Heather Knight who, in a slyly nasty* piece posted Saturday, basically called San Francisco's current mayor a slowpoke liar, but a slowpoke liar who no one is willing to challenge in next year's election. At least, not yet.

Describing the mayor as “the Guy Who Forms a Working Group and Releases Its Plan Six Months Later," Knight drubs Lee for taking so long to make San Francisco policy decisions that "the seasons change outside the window of the conference room," citing recommendations to change to the the city's response to emergencies as something that "could have been decided in an afternoon," as opposed to the many months it actually took.

She also paints a picture of a leader unwilling to take a stand on controversial issues, and one who is less than honest with the public, casting a skeptical eye on his claim that he was unaware of the pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong when he flew the Chinese flag above City Hall. Oh, she says he's flat out lied regarding a planned re-election run, saying "He also recently told reporters he hasn’t thought about running for re-election next year when he has actually confirmed his intention to run to several people."

As you might recall, Lee was named interim mayor when then-Mayor Gavin Newsom ascended to the Lt. Gov position in January 2011, with the understanding slash promise that he'd move back into his old job as City Administrator when the election rolled around that November. Instead, Lee "changed his mind" and ran for the job, winning the non-interim seat in an election that had one of San Francisco's lowest turnouts for a contested mayoral race ever.

And it's likely that he'll do it all again in 2015's election (November 3, mark your calendar!) for, as Knight notes, "so far, nobody’s stepping in to challenge Lee next year," including frequent gadflies Supervisor John Avalos, 90s-era SF mayor Art Agnos and former Supe Aaron Peskin.

So who's left? A 2013 poll said that Tom Ammiano (whose current Assembly seat will go to either Supe David Chiu or Supe David Campos next year) could be Lee's top rival, but even that study showed him trailing the incumbent by 42% to 33%. But that was 2013! A lot has changed since then.

So we turn it to you, SFist commenters. Who do you think could stand a chance against Ed Lee? Who would you like to see run? Or would you prefer that things stay as they are in City Hall, with four more mustachioed years after the 2015 race?

*This is a compliment.
