Service on the San Francisco Municipal Railway's T-Third line was disrupted for about 2.5 hours this morning after one of the transit agency's light-rail vehicles struck a elderly man.

According to SFMTA spokesperson Paul Rose, the Muni Metro vehicle was traveling south on Third Street at Carroll Avenue in the Bayview when it struck a 71-year-old male pedestrian at 5:01 a.m.

According to SF Weekly, the man "was trying to cross the street" at the intersection of Third and Carroll when he was struck.

"A pile of clothes and a toppled walker could be seen on the tracks" following the collision, CBS5 reports.

The pedestrian, who suffered life-threatening head and facial injuries, was transported to San Francisco General Hospital, Rose says.

Regular service resumed on the T-Third and the intersection reopened at 7:30 a.m. As is standard procedure in Muni crashes, the driver will be tested for drugs and alcohol, Rose says.
