For the second time in a week crews were ripping out the grass at Levi's Stadium after complaints about the original turf from 49ers players. This just happened last Wednesday, as you'll recall, with sod going in to replace the original turf that had been planted, at the expense of $1.4 million, which apparently "fell apart" after the 49ers' first pre-season game.

Now, after their second game against the San Diego Chargers, that sod it getting replaced with new sod, perhaps of a different kind more commonly used by the NFL across the country, as the Mercury News reports.

Last week's sod was meant only a temporary fix to a bigger problem, and the new installation this week, along with some "undisclosed" new sand layer underneath, is being funded by the 49ers themselves — taking the onus off the public Santa Clara Stadium Authority, which funded the construction.

The team expects the new, hopefully more hardy playing surface, to be ready in time for a Chile-vs-Mexicao soccer match on September 6, and for the 49ers regular season opener against the Chicago Bears on September 14.

Above, watch a drone's-eye view of the entire stadium, including that original, problematic turf, back while the stadium was still under construction in May.
