The San Francisco 49ers' practice was halted on Wednesday due to unplayable field conditions, the Sac Bee reports. Reportedly less than an hour into practice, 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh called his team off the field to prevent any injuries from happening due to divots in the turf, which occurred during the Niners first game at the stadium last Sunday. Now the field is being replaced with new sod, in time for the 49ers' preseason game against the San Diego Chargers.
The new grass, which KTVU and other media outlets have been tweeting images of, is apparently a temporary solution to a bigger problem. According to the San Jose Mercury News, the thick-cut sod that is replacing the damaged, $1.4 million field won't last long term and can't form deep roots.
Executive director of the National Turf Grass Evaluation Program, Kevin Morris, tells the Merc: "One game shouldn't have caused it to fall apart. It's a problem for the team for sure."
As of now, there's no word on how the stadium will fix the field for the regular season, which begins on September 14.
Meanwhile, a feng shui expert who toured Levi's Stadium calls its design elements "powerful" and "positive," the Chronicle reports, so maybe the field issues will be solved through good "chi."
