Within a week of learning about Robin Williams death, more than six thousand people have signed a Change.org petition calling for a tunnel between Sausalito and Mill Valley to be re-named the “Robin Williams Tunnel.” Now Assemblyman Marc Levine, D-San Rafael, has offered to help, saying he would introduce the resolution in Sacramento with the permission of Williams' family.
Currently named after William Waldo, a local politician in the mid-19th Century, the Waldo Tunnel are twin tubes on Highway 101 famously painted with rainbows along its arched southern entrance and exit. It's the colorful portal that drivers coming off the Golden Gate Bridge see as they enter Marin County, where Williams passed in his Tiburon home on August 11.
According to the San Jose Mercury News, changing the bridge's name will require approval by the Legislature, which wouldn't happen until sessions begin in December, and would cost about $5,000.
The petition needs another 1,052 supporters at the time of writing.
