Tuesday night around 9:15 p.m., a male victim was shot in the head on Turner Terrace in the Potrero Annex housing complex about a block from the Potrero Hill Recreation Center.

An officer responding to reports of a shooting arrived to find the victim with a gunshot wound to the head. According to SFPD spokesman Officer Gordon Shyy, the man was taken to San Francisco General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The victim has not yet been identified. After the shooting, a small crowd gathered near where the victim was shot.

According to SFPD Chief Greg Suhr the city's homicide rate is down for 2014. There were only four homicides through the end of April.

Update 1 p.m.: The victim has been identified as 23-year-old Derrick Whitfield of San Francisco. Police responded in force to an alert triggered by the citywide ShotSpotter system. SFPD has not released a suspect description yet, but witnesses told the Examiner there was "a lot of gunfire, easily two clips unloaded" and believed there may have been a shootout. Three men were spotted coming out of a building on Turner Terrace, one of them was limping.

The homicide is San Francisco's eighth in 2014.
