After "calling a time-out" on the shimmering and contentious waterfront arena on Piers 30-32 in February, the Golden State Warriors are now beginning to consider shifting the plan south to Mission Bay and teaming up with the Giant's to build the arena in Lot A.

According to the City Hall mustaches Matier & Ross, the two teams haven't actually talked to each other about the possibility of putting the area in the parking lot across McCovey Cove from AT&T Park, but both have said they would be open to the idea. A Warriors spokesperson, however, saiod things are still "full steam ahead" with the original plan on Piers 30-32 despite the mounting opposition from opponents of waterfront development and rising costs of rehabilitating the dilapidated piers.

Mayor Ed Lee, who has been leading the charge to bring the Warriors back to the city, only commented on the rumor through his spokeswoman, who said that getting a waterfront entertainment complex built is still a priority for Lee.

The Giants have not commented on the plan, but the addition of the arena could help push forward their own mega-development project that will includes two 30-plus-story apartment complexes and a 2,100-car parking garage. It'll also make it Mission Bay an incredibly parking-friendly neighborhood, since they've already got a celebrated 627-spot garage for the UCSF campus. The rest of the neighborhood, however, is still pretty ugly.

Shifting the arena plan south would still put it in an area busy enough to support an entire season of basketball plus the other 150 events per year that will round out the schedule. There's also the matter of that June ballot measure, supported by former mayor Art Agnos, which would require voter approval for any waterfront buildings taller than the current height limits. While Pier 30-32 neighbors have been against the Warriors plan in pretty much any form, the team might have better luck getting their new venue built in an area where there's not yet a firmly established neighborhood. Agnos and fellow waterfront preservationist Aaron Peskin have both said they would support putting the arena in Lot A. So basically everyone thinks this is a slam dunk/home run even though neither team has even stepped up to negotiations yet.
