Just days after NFL-bound Michael Sam told the world "I am an openly, proud gay man," one local reporter reminded us the trouble the 49ers have run into when attempting to navigate issues of orientation—and revealed a surprising quote from the team's owner.
"If he does it again, crucify him," Jed York apparently told the Chron "weeks" after SF 49er Chris Culliver's January, 2013 remarks like "No, we don't got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do" and Nah can't be in the locker room man. Nah."
Chron scribe C.W. Nevius suddenly recalled his 2013 conversation with York this week, presumably reminded by Sam's announcement.
(One has to wonder what York believes should be inflicted on Culliver for being less than a gentleman regarding women, as a conversation Culliver posted to Instagram suggests he is.)
And, in any case, Culliver appears to have a softer side. This week, Culliver (whose injury last August kept him from playing last season), said that he cried when he watched teammate NaVorro Bowman tear his ACL in this year's NFC Championship game.
Culliver said "When it happened, I cried...this time, I'm in his corner," Culliver said, which is totally not a double entendre.
"Keep that positive vibe and that will heal your body, your mind and your soul."
We're happy to hear that you're all about positive vibes, Culliver! Keep it up. Because we have the hammer and nails right here.
