Reveille Coffee opened its second cafe on Monday, smack dab in the heart of gay mecca. Following in the footsteps of Tommy and Chris Newbury's North Beach location, the brothers opened the place next door to a popular Starbucks, one well known as the neighborhood's bear hangout. Will the Newbury's new digs tempt grizzlies away from their preferred den? Let's hope.

According to Castro Biscuit managing editor Roy McKenzie, the place comes at a time when Castro residents have been complaining about the service at the queer neighborhood's cafes, which, let's face it, are a bit dated. "While the Castro is seeing a wave of new coffee shops entering the area, many of our readers have complained that the Castro’s current offerings have fallen behind in terms of service. Perhaps Réveille will give those shops a run for their money,” McKenzie tells SFist. (Hear, hear. As of late, I've seen Castro coffeehouses featuring one too many oat cakes, Rice Krisipe treats, and frightening Saran Wrapped slices of pie—inedible tomfoolery that should've gone the way of zines and spoken word nights.)

The coffee, naturally, will be superb. According to Inside Scoop, "there will be a rectangular coffee bar with a three group Linea La Marzocco MP machine; coffee geeks, also take note that they’ll use a Mahlkonig EK43 grinder and a Fetco for brewed coffee." Which is to say, your coffee will take time. Be patient. As for the decor, it's what we're all accustomed to seeing these days: wood. Lots of it. Not bad, but certainly dominate. As Eater notes, "White metal stools make up the seating at the central wooden bar and tables run the length of the space toward the back wall, which is made up of stacked split wood."

Reveille joins La Taza, Philz, and Starbucks on 18th Street's queer coffee row. And because San Francisco is a city that likes to beat a food trend to into the Earth's core, Hearth Coffee Roasters will be coming to the old Sun Tanning spot—oh, YOU know the place—a block over on 3985 17th Street.

Reveille Coffee: 4076 18th Street (at Castro); hours are 7am-9pm daily.
