An arsonist hit the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco (1450 Laguna) Wednesday night. At around 9:30 pm, "a person got out of a minivan parked in front of the consulate’s front doors [and] poured two buckets of gasoline onto the front door and then set it on fire." No one was injured, but the consulate's door and lobby were badly burned.
While a suspect has yet to be apprehend, the F.B.I. are involved. "We take this incident very seriously, and the Bureau of Diplomatic Security is working with the FBI and local authorities to investigate and apprehend the perpetrators," [SFFD spokesperson Marie Harf] told Associated Press. "Department officials are communicating with Chinese officials to provide support and updates on the case."
Wang Chuan, a spokesperson for the for the Chinese Consulate, had stern words for the person(s) responsible for the attack. Standing in front of the charred building, he said, "We strongly condemn this despicable act and have already made representations with the U.S. on the attack ... And we hope that the U.S. takes all necessary measures to provide adequate protection to the consular personnel and properties and bring the culprits to justice as soon as possible."
