An Oakland resident was shot outside his home on the 3100 block of Coolidge Avenue at about 10 p.m. Sunday night. The victim has not yet been identified.
A suspect or suspects fled in a green car, and OPD seemed to have little information beyond that.
At this time of year it's traditional to start to assess the murder rates of Bay Area cities, with Oakland's lately being the deadliest. Sunday's shooting marked the 84th murder in the city this year, which is notably and thankfully down from 2012's count of 131, which landed Oakland on the list of America's Ten Deadliest Cities. The metric for last year was 33.1 murders for every 100,000 citizens, but that should be much lower this year unless December becomes a particularly violent month.
Oakland has been experimenting with Operation Ceasefire since last year, and advocates for the program, which brings particularly violent gang members together with members of their community and threatens heightened police attention if they don't work together to curb violence.
The previous violent death in Oakland came on November 22 with the killing of 59-year-old Melinda Thomas, who was found with severe trauma to her body, but whose death has not officially been ruled a homicide.
