Some thirty-odd palm trees are being installed along the Bay Bridge's new eastern span, and opinions are mixed over the new look, with some commuters particularly irked over the palms' visual association with our SoCal neighbors.

According to SF Appeal, the Canary Island date palms cost about $15,000 to buy, ship and plant. Ahem, $15,000 each. That's $450,000 to adorn the already spiffy-looking span with a beachy LA-style look, which Caltrans says matches “the vertical symmetry on the bridge."
