While most BART employees are asking for a raise, one station agent came up with an enterprising side hustle in order to make a few extra bucks. Over the past three years, 40-year-old Avery Nulph and his wife Gladys skimmed extra fares off of confiscated BART tickets and then resold them as new on eBay.

The scam was simple: Avery collected BART tickets with remaining cash value on them, which station agents are allowed to do if a rider needs to exit a station and their card is with a dollar of the necessary fare. Instead of destroying the tickets per BART rules, Nulph would continue adding value to the cards and then hand them off to his wife who would sell them at a discount on eBay. At the moment, you can still buy BART tickets for five bucks off.

Nulph pled no contest to felony charges of grand theft on Thursday. His 47-year-old wife also pled no contest to conspiracy charges. The Nulphs are now facing five years of probation and will be paying the ultimate BART excursion fare of $48,000 or otherwise spend a year in jail.
