Just before 8 a.m. Monday morning, a 12-year-old boy was killed while biking in front of Excelsior Middle School in Contra Costa County. The boy was reportedly struck and pinned under a black GMC Yukon SUV.

California Highway Patrol officers responded to the scene in Byron, California in eastern Contra Costa County around 7:48 a.m. this morning. According to investigators, a mother behind the wheel of the black SUV had just dropped off several children and was pulling away when she heard a bump. The woman apparently thought she hit a ball, but got out of the car to find the boy stuck underneath. KTVU reports the woman was "distraught and cooperating with CHP."

Grief counselors were notified at the school and another mother told KTVU that the boy was "a really good kid."
