Thankfully the wildfire burning on the back side of Mount Diablo appears to be somewhat under control as of this morning, with a total of 3,243 acres having been burned. It's now 45 percent contained, and cooler weather and changes in wind direction have helped the fire fight.
That acreage count is up from 1,500 acres on Monday morning, but firefighters say that daylight today should so some improving conditions. They still have about five more miles of fire lines to build, as CBS reports. There are 700 firefighters still battling the blaze.
The 3,700-acre figure quoted in the Mercury News and elsewhere Monday appears to have been incorrect.
The fire broke out on Sunday afternoon and has burned a swath of brush and trees on the east and northerns slopes of Mount Diablo. 100 homes remain evacuated, mostly in and around Clayton, and it's unclear when those people will be allowed back in their homes. No structures have been damaged, however.
