This afternoon in Bernal Heights' Holly Park, a woman lying on the grass park with her infant was killed after a San Francisco Recreation and Parks van ran her over. A few eyewitnesses saw what happened and tried to perform CPR on the injured mother. She later died at a nearby hospital.

The child was not injured.

The van -- presumably unaware they had just hit a person, but we'll know more later -- took off from the scene. The driver and vehicle were later found. The suspect is currently being questioned.

We'll update as soon as we know more.

Update: Bernalwood has a good rundown of all the coverage. The driver's name has still not been released, but Rec & Parks manager Phil Ginsburg issued a statement saying, "On behalf of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim of a tragic accident that occurred at Holly Park this afternoon. This is a devastating day for all."

Also, the Chron is reporting that neighbors around Holly Park have noted at least one, if not more, of the gardeners employed by Rec & Parks tend to drive recklessly through the park, and that one nearly killed a woman's German shepherd recently.
