A California school district has been ordered by the U.S. Departments of Justice and Education to treat a trans male ninth grader as male, despite his being born female. The teenager, who chose to remain anonymous, filed a complaint against the school district in order to gain access to the boys' locker room and to be allowed to play on boys' sports teams, and the DOJ today issued a resolution agreement with the Arcadia School District (outside of L.A.) stating that the student "will be treated like other male students while attending school in the district."

The National Center for Lesbian Rights advocated on behalf of the student, and a rep for the organization says that the decision "sends a clear message to school districts around the country saying ‘This is what the federal government is going to be expecting of you.'"

Earlier this month, the California Senate passed a bill to protect trans teens, and basically says the same thing, that they should be permitted to use the bathrooms and join the sports teams that coincide with their gender identity.

In other news, the story of trans teen couple Arin Andrews and Katie Hill, who transitioned together and fell in love, has gone viral, so much so that BuzzFeed even published a primer on trans terminology this week.
