Richard Ramirez, the serial killer known as "the Night Stalker," died of natural causes while on Death Row at San Quentin State Prison today.
Ramirez terrorized California during the summer of 1986 when he would enter homes and rape and murder families late at night. On September 20, 1989, he was found guilty of 13 counts of murder, 5 attempted murders, 11 sexual assaults and 14 burglaries. His victims ranged in age of 9 to 83.
In 2006, the California Supreme Court upheld the death penalty for Ramirez.
San Quentin prison will release more details about his death later today.
Though a rapist and murdered, Ramirez has his fair share of sanity-estranged fans. During his time in prison, he received bushels of fan mail from female groupies. He married Doreen Lioy, a freelance magazine editor with a B.A. in English Literature, in October of 1996. When the couple separated years later in 2011, it sent shockwaves throughout the serial-killer fan community. On PrisonTalk forum, crestfallen user WhitePiony replied to the news thusly: "I cannot believe this!! Can it be true? They've been married at least 10 years and now they are no longer together?! I just heard these disturbing news and got somewhat sad - I mean if they can't make it work.. then who can...?"
