We're getting word on a fatal accident in the Mission District after a garbage truck struck and killed a cyclist this morning. The accident happened at around 6:45 at 16th and South Van Ness.
The rider died at the scene and, according to SF Appeal, the garbage truck driver is "cooperating with investigators, and it does not appear alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision."
KRON 4 News reports that it was a "gruesome scene." The truck driver allegedly made a right onto South Van Ness from 16th while the cyclist was pedaling on the right. The driver apparently didn't see the cyclist while making a turn, hitting and then dragging the bicyclist in the process. The driver then continued toward 17th not realizing someone was stuck under the truck.
We'll update as soon as we know more.
