A 16-year-old boy, known by neighbors as "one of the good kids," was shot and killed last night while sitting in a car outside his parents' house in East Palo Alto. Police say the car was hit by 20 rounds in what may have been a case of mistaken identity.

Victim Jose Luis Quinones, a student at Woodside High School, was sitting in an idling Nissan Maxima with three other friends around 11 p.m. Sunday night when two gunmen got out of another vehicle, walked up to the car and opened fire. Two of the teens in the car were also hit by the barrage of bullets, but both are expected to survive. A fourth teen was uninjured in the incident. Police believe the two suspects ran back to their car and drove off. No arrests have been made and there's no description of the suspect vehicle at the moment.

Quinones' father, Luis Sr., says he found his son dead at the scene after two of the injured kids ran to his house. Quinones believes the gunmen may have intended to kill a different target because his son was driving someone else's Nissan.

CBS has the on-the-street report:

Just last week another teenager was injured in a drive-by shooting in East Palo Alto. In that incident, a 19-year-old victim was shot in the foot while walking to his car in broad daylight.
