The remains of a heavily decomposed human head were found among a load of recycling at a West Oakland processing center around 8:45 a.m. Wednesday morning. Employees at the California Waste Solutions facility on 10th Street near the Oakland shipyards say the disembodied head was mummified.
Because the center processes recycling from all over the bay area, investigators had not yet determined where it came from as of Wednesday evening. The remains were in such poor shape, there are little to no details about the person's identity at this point. It is currently unclear whether the skull belong to a man or a woman and how long ago the person died.
Police say it will take awhile to identify the remains, but in the meantime they've begun searching the facility for additional evidence.
