Last night just before 10 p.m. San Francisco Police officers responded to an emergency call from a man in Potrero Hill who claimed to have just stabbed his brother-in-law. According to SFPD officer Gordon Shyy, "a second male voice was heard in the background pleading for help."

When officers arrived on the scene on the 900 block of De Haro Street near Southern Heights Avenue, they found the victim suffering from multiple knife wounds to his head, arms and chest — all apparently inflicted by a machete found later nearby. While attempting to help the victim, the suspect came at the officers armed with a hammer.

When the suspect refused to drop the tool at the cops' command, one officer fired his weapon, striking the suspect. Both men were taken to S.F. General to be treated. The stabbing victim's injuries were considered to be life-threatening, but according to police he is now conscious and speaking with cops and hospital staff. The hammer-wielding suspect, meanwhile, died from the gunshot wound.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave, per SFPD protocol.
