San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr has been leading a recent push to equip 100 specially trained officers with less-than-lethal weapons as an alternative to, well, to shooting people with bullets, obviously. While the department has been holding several public meetings to address community concerns about arming a portion of our police force with stun guns, the Bay Guardian dug up a list of the other less-than-lethal weaponry Suhr's department looked into. From pepper-loaded paintball guns to net-launching handcannons, here are those weapons in all their crime-stopping action:
Talon: Our favorite of the bunch, because it looks like something ripped out of one of those forgettable Jurassic Park sequels. It's a handheld launcher for a 3-pound kevlar net that, according to this video, will make a knife-wielding thug just sort of fall over on the ground? Added bonus, it can also be used to confuse the shit out of off-leash dogs and it will come in handy if the city is ever invaded by tiny dinosaurs:
Pepperball: This device looks almost exactly like a paintball gun, but happens to be loaded with pellets of the same irritant used in bear spray, thus allowing law enforcement officers to maintain their distance while they casually burn perpetrators' faces. The company also makes a combination pepperball launcher/flashlight. (Can't see anything ever going wrong there.) Below, the Placer County Sheriff's Department demonstrates how to take down an unruly biker from a distance:
Piexon JPX: The JPX deploys a splat of pepper solution at speeds up to 400 miles per hour from up to 23 feet away. That's like being hit in the face with an inconceivable tornado of hot sauce, compared to the gentle breeze of a commercial pepper spray canister. The speed means bad guys never see it coming, but last year a woman in Riverside county was blinded by the award-winning Swiss device when the jet of pepper spray, shot at too-close range, sliced her eyeball in half. Here it is being tested on somebody's girlfriend in a backyard in Phoenix:
Phazzer: While their company name may sound like a lazer tag toy from the nineties, Phazzer actually makes pistol-style Taser knockoffs that can be loaded with different kinds of ammo including electrical stun cartridges, pepper spray or rubber bullets. They also come in hot pink, for the fashionable police force.
Karbon Like Phazzer, Karbon makes a Taser knock-off with a few extra features. Most notable being: you can use standard batteries available at any corner store, usage data can be downloaded to a computer and one model even has a camera mounted on the barrel, which should help with police brutality cases in the future. This guy in Tampa takes one for the team:
FN Herstal: While Herstal is known for their military weapons, they also make a 15-round semi-automatic FN 33 Less Lethal Launcher, which fires impact projectiles that can include either paint splatters (washable or indelible!) and chemical irritants. There's also a not-so-mean-looking pistol version. Here, we see a SWAT team using it to take down a man threatening to set himself on fire:
