Down in rural Kern County, California, in the town of Taft, a student gunman open-fired in a classroom during first period this morning, injuring a 16-year-old male student and a teacher as well.

The suspect gunman, who is in custody, is a 16-year-old male student at Taft Union High School who had not shown up for class that day, but who reportedly stormed into the school with a 12-gauge shotgun around 9 a.m. Apparently he entered a classroom and announced his two victims, the second of whom he shot at and missed.

The 16-year-old victim was shot in the upper chest, and is said to be in critical but stable condition.

A teacher was treated for a pellet wound to the head, and another student was being treated for temporary hearing loss. He was sitting very close to the gun when it was fired.

We're eagerly awaiting the NRA's response to this one.
