A man who went out in the rain to search for his lost cat died last night after apparently slipping and falling into a quarry on the edge of the Rockridge and Piedmont neighborhoods in Oakland.

The man was reported missing yesterday evening by a friend who told firefighters he had gone out looking for his missing cat near the quarry that sits between the Claremont Country Club, Mountain View Cemetery and the Rockridge Shopping Center. KTVU reports firefighters searched the edge of the rain-slicked edges of the flooded quarry for hours last night before a dive team found the body 30 feet below the surface just before 1 a.m. this morning.

The victim has not been identified, pending notification of next of kin, and no word yet on what happened to the cat.
