A man was struck and killed while walking in the Muni tunnel near Montgomery Station this morning at 7:30 a.m., which is causing a massive commuter nightmare as we speak.

The unidentified man was struck by an inbound J train 700 feet east of the station platform, in the tunnel between there and Embarcadero, as the Chronicle reports. He died at the scene and the station was closed pending a medical examiner's investigation.

Consequently subway service was shut down between Church and Embarcadero stations, and many will be late for work today. If you still haven't left yet, you're advised to find an F that isn't packed, get on BART, or a bus, or just trying biking or walking. There's no estimate as to when Muni service will resume.

Update: BART will allow Muni passengers to ride for free between Balboa Park and Embarcadero fro free with Muni tickets until further notice.

Update 2: Muni has restored service and Montgomery Station reopened as of 10:20 a.m.
